While fake identification cards have become more sophisticated in recent years, nightclub and restaurant owners in Colorado Springs have incorporated new technologies to combat underage drinking. According to a report by gazette.com, doormen will now be using handheld ID scanners to discover fraudulent driver's licenses.
Colorado Springs is home to a number of colleges and universities, including Colorado College, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) and Pikes Peak Community College. With the high concentration of students under 21, the use of fake identification cards and underage drinking has been a constant problem for law enforcement.
A ColoradoDaily.com report suggests that most students use a different person's license or identification card and pass themselves off as that person. This is considered "in-possession" use, and makes up a majority of fake ID cases. Others may use manufactured cards printed using special holographic paper or purchased online.
ID scanners are electronic devices that read the unique patterns and information embedded in the card, such as bar codes, holograms and combinations of letters and numbers. Much like a credit card scanner, doormen can slide the card through the reader. Accurate information will prompt a green checkmark on the screen, while false information may yield a red "X" or other warning sign. The on-screen information will also display the person's picture, birth date and license information.
Clubs and restaurants can also store information collected through the scanners. Some have used them to identify unruly patrons as well as customers who walk out on checks.
Many young people don't understand or appreciate the consequences of being caught using a fake ID. While most instances are charged as municipal offenses, fake ID cases can be charged as misdemeanors or felonies, depending on the circumstances.
If you have been cited for using or possessing a fraudulent identification card, an experienced criminal defense attorney can advise you of your rights and options.
